We’re taking Shropshire Council to court to stop the road..
But this costs money!

Can you help us raise £20,000 for a Public Inquiry and Judicial Review?

The UK government is using £200m of your hard-earned taxes to pay for just four miles of destructive road. We think that money would be better spent on sustainable transport, or our crumbling schools and NHS.

WE CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU! Please DONATE

During late 2024 there have been a number of key developments in the situation regarding thjis disastrous project including a remarkably damning report by the council’s external auditors into the running of the project. Following this, Mark Barrow, the lead Officer in charge of the project has taken voluntary redundancy ‘by mutual agreement’ with the council. Tracy Darke who was leading on the project from the LPA perspective left in the summer. This seems to leave the delivery of the project and planning application in limbo.

Meanwhile, a new Carbon Assessment into the road shows that the assessed greenhouse gas emissions have more than doubled since the application was considered by the planning committee and the planning application is no longer considered to be ‘Decided’. Instead it goes back to the committee in ‘the new year’. The situation is changing so rapidly at the moment it is best to keep an eye on our Facebook page for the latest news. .This four mile stretch of road will destroy nine irreplaceable ancient trees including the iconic 550 year old Darwin Oak, named after the town’s most famous son. If you haven’t signed this petition to save the 550 year old Darwin Oak then please do so.

It will also fell over a thousand other trees, rip up 4km of hedgerows, and destroy vital habitats. It’s a chainsaw massacre!

The NWRR will take 130 years to be ‘net zero’, and it risks irreversible contamination of the town’s drinking water supply…

100% of all funds raised will go directly to our lawyers to fund this legal challenge. Any surplus will be donated to The Good Law Project to help them fight climate-wrecking new roads around the UK.

A huge number of people listened to what we have been saying and objected to the planning application (a record breaking 5400 with only 220 people supporting it).

The NWRR planning application was discussed at a meeting of the Northern Planning Committee on 31st Oct 2023. Voting along party lines, 6 (Conservative) to 5 (Lib Dem, Labour and Green) and ignoring the huge numbers of objectors, the meeting passed a resolution to approve the planning application but made this decision subject to 36 planning conditions being agreed and then brought back to Committee for confirmation at a future meeting.

This means that, far from being given the ‘go ahead’ and ‘approved’ as has been stated by the council and Shrewsbury and Atcham’s MP, the scheme still needs planning conditions to be agreed with the Environment Agency and Severn Trent Water. The two organisations have raised significant concerns about the risk that the road poses to the Shelton boreholes that supply Shrewsbury and large parts of rural Shropshire. They will need to be completely satisfied before planning conditions can be finalised. It is hard to see this being resolved any time soon.
